The Dukan Diet is the diet and healthy eating program designed by Dr. Pierre Dukan, a doctor who has built his entire medical career around helping people lose weight and start feeling great. For years, the Dukan Diet was known as ‘French women’s best kept fat busting secret’ but now the plan is responsible for the new found healthy eating habits of more than 1.5 million dieters, including a number of celebrities, such as Gisele Bundchen and Jennifer Lopez. More recently however, the Dukan Diet has seen an uplift in interest following the suggestion that the Middleton family spent a few weeks detoxing on this diet prior to the wedding of their daughter Kate to Prince William. Even without the hype however, the results of this diet do rather speak for themselves!

Like many diet plans currently on the market, the Dukan Diet relies on a ‘phased’ approach that allows dieters to gradually reintroduce foods that are banned in earlier phases so that they can keep weight off in the long term (whilst still having the opportunity to eat some of their favorite foods again). The first phase of the diet is the attack phase, where an appropriate weight target is determined and only protein and oat bran pancakes are consumed for between two and seven days (depending on the severity of the weight problem in question). This attack phase allows dieters to achieve substantial weight loss in the first week and spurs them on to achieve results in the long term. The ‘cruise’ phase allows the introduction of vegetables on alternate days, whilst the final two phases, ‘consolidation’ and ‘stabilization’ provide dieters with a strategy to keep the weight off whilst still eating what they like (within reason).

With such rapid results, it’s easy to see why the Dukan Diet topped out the international bestseller list on more than one occasion. In truth, however, there’s a lot more to this diet book than just extreme weight loss. Dieters can also make use of a great shopping guide and meal planner, eating out guide, recipe book and more – all of which helps to make this diet easier to follow. Similarly, if the advice and recipes contained in the book aren’t enough to keep you interested (especially in the later phases of the diet), the diet also has a number of companion cookbooks and recipe guides that help to spice things up a little by adding some variety.

Although the results of this diet are likely to be substantial and relatively rapid, the truth remains that it isn’t suitable for everyone. The protein only ‘attack’ phase is difficult to stick to, and the exclusion of alcohol and carbohydrates for an extended period of time may be difficult for some dieters. If you’re willing to make some sacrifices however, The Dukan Diet might well be perfect for you!
